How To Write A Scientific Paper Worth Reading

Write a scientific paper? You want to publish your scientific paper.

From late 2006 through late 2010, I edited hundreds of scientific papers for the doctors and the medical students at Chiang Mai University.

That's in Thailand.

The overwhelming majority of those papers were published in international peer-reviewed journals. These authors are not native English speakers. Meanwhile, I have never learned to read, write, or speak Thai. We worked only in English, and these guys (and ladies) were consistently published.

Oh, and some of these guys have followed me (by email) to Hanoi. I still edit their papers.

What's my secret?

I don't like that question.

There is no secret. There never has been a secret. Write clearly, write well, say what you mean, get published. If only it were so easy for me as a novelist.

One thing I learned teaching Advanced English Writing in China, and later when giving these lectures in Thailand, is that if you can't explain it in clear, simple English, stripped of all the BS, you haven't thought about it enough yet.

It doesn't really matter if English is your first language or not. I admire anyone writing in a non-native language, I really do, but you know what? We authors all face many challenges when we write. Non-native English authors simply have one more than the rest of us. It's not a big deal, but it is worth a mention, so I give it one.
