That's a loaded comment, isn't it? It makes you wonder if I've truly experienced the hours of hard thinking that goes into writing a novel. Getting those characters just right, sorting out who they are, what they've been, what they want to become, what they're up against, and just how they twist and turn around each other in the struggle. Wrestling with point of view questions, pace, plots, word choice, tight interesting dialogue, and the endless minutiae of description and word counts and just moving everybody from place to place. Finding the time and energy when you really have neither. Giving months of your life to this thing for reasons you can't explain to anyone else, maybe not even fully to yourself. And hey, the thrill of that special zone where it's all going just right. Yep. I've experienced it. Along with the relief of finishing, the let down, the self-doubt, the ambivalence toward doing it all again for the next one. Do I still say writing your novel is the easy part? I do.
