I wandered the streets wearing nothing but a pair of pants and noticing the winter cold of 3:00 a.m., unknowing of what had happened since 9:00 p.m. I felt as though I had fallen through an endless void, and I noticed the burns on my bare arms and feet. However, I felt no pain except for the aching throughout my body. My confused mind recognized the shoddy building that my rented room was in, and I went inside.
Grabbing a shirt from the pile of dirty clothes on my worn couch, I put it on as I walked to the refrigerator in the hope of finding a beer. As usual, I was out of beer, and I went back to the couch, pushed all of the dirty clothes onto the floor, and lay on the couch. I began to remember the strange combination of events which had placed me in my unique situation.
I had been to the local bar, and a street gang had taken me into a building somewhere. We all drank several gallons of cheap booze, and then something had happened which I couldn't remember. After that, the gang left and I was unable to move. The floor disappeared and — there was the sensation of falling through an endless void. It lasted an inestimably long time, after which I saw sharp knife blades covering every inch of the floor. I had no way to stop myself as my inevitably painful death drew ever closer.
When l was almost upon the blades, they all became white feathers whose softness totally overcame me. I landed on something and saw a giant beak above me moving closer. I was atop the back of a giant bird!
Jumping just in time to avoid painful death once more, I landed in a small, dark room now having a ceiling. When I opened its only door, I saw an elevator and I cautiously stepped in. Then the door closed and the elevator rose abruptly. I ran through the door when it opened and I was then standing in a world of blue hobgoblins, purple elves, orange dwarves, and green halflings, the elevator now gone with me still trapped in this nightmare. The creatures were everywhere, so I ran into the weakest looking group, who quickly defeated me and threw me into a room. I landed in front of a hungry green dragon, and ran. I turned to see the chlorine gas of its breath envelop me, and I tasted of death once more.
Now I was back in the building, breathing in the smoke of its burning. I climbed out through a broken window, tearing my sweat-moistened shirt. I took it off and, seeing that the soles of my shoes had melted, I took them off too. Then I wandered home.
But what had happened between the booze and the falling? I observed the holes in my arm and the missing watch, and I left to find the gang.
In an alley, I gave the gang my gold cross necklace. I knew that, since my last trip was bad, this one would be good. The needle was reinserted into my arm, and I fell to the floor. As the gang left, the stampeding elephants got closer.
